Teamwork!

We have used BreakoutEDU to practise our team work skills. We have learnt that we often cannot work by ourselves. If we work together it will help to solve the problem. When we are working as a team it is important that we show our good listening skills. This means we should look at the person that is speaking and we should not talk over the other person.   1st class and some children from Senior Infants had great fun working together to solve problems that involved clues around the classroom. We had to unlock 4 boxes using clues and team work. Some clues involved reading but some were directional clues. We would love to try breakout again in the New Year to help improve our team work skills. It is so important that we can learn to work together! We felt a great sense of achievement at the end of the game.  ...

Talking Reindeer

We’ve been improving our reading expression. This means that we’ve been trying to make our voices sound like they are telling an exciting story. Today we used ChatterPix to help us to create a talking Reindeer for our Reindeer poem. We each practised reading a part of the poem and discussed what areas we felt we were good at reading and what could be improved. It made reading much more fun and exciting! Have a a look at our Reindeer poem below 🎅🏼  ...

Word Hunt

Today we had great fun hunting for words around the classroom. We worked in pairs. We found each word, sounded it out, read the word and wrote it on our iPads. After we found all the words, we sorted the words. We found words that end in -it and -in. We even found some tricky words that we couldn’t sound out- but we could read them! It was lots of fun 😊 Have a look at some pictures...

Tricky Words

We have been learning to read and spell tricky words. It is so much fun! Tricky words are words that we cannot sound out. Learning tricky words is easier when we are learning through play.   Some ways we learn through play are; Play-doh words (roll the words out of play-doh) Magnetic letter words (magnetic letters on our whiteboards) Sand words (we make the words in sand) Painting words (using cotton buds) Roll and read games Bean bag toss (we throw a bean bag onto the words and read the words to win a point!) Eggy words app (a really FUN app for reading) http://readingeggs.co.uk/apps/eggy-words/ Sight words app https://itunes.apple.com/ie/app/sight-words-learning-games/id518258478?mt=8   If you want any more spelling ideas follow the link below or ask Múinteoir Laura!...

Maths Stations in 1st Class

We are having great fun in our maths stations each week. This week we have been learning about 2-D shapes. We are also practising spatial awareness. We have been giving directions to our partners so that they can draw secret pictures. We must know our left and right to figure out the secret pictures! We have been using language such as; top, bottom, middle, center, right and left. We have also practised drawing and naming the 2-D shapes. This is helping us to give directions and follow directions....
