We are Butterfly Experts!

A couple of weeks ago, we got a very special delivery into our school. It was a container of baby caterpillars. Over the past couple of weeks, we have been examining the growth of these caterpillars. We have been observing the changes that have occurred and their different stages of life.   The caterpillars started off very small and ate lots and lots of food. They formed j-shapes and hung from the bottom of their containers. They formed chrysalides and built cocoons around themselves. They waited like this for a number of days… We were growing impatient waiting for something to happen!                                Finally, beautiful Monarch butterflies popped out of their cocoons. They were very pretty and brightly coloured. We worked creatively on lots of different activities to do with butterflies over this time. We read the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. We sequenced the story using pictures of the main events and we did a literary review on it. We also created a background for a digital report on the story.   Together, we made up a story about Starlight, a clever, resourceful butterfly who got herself out of a tricky situation with a wicked witch. We made our own creative stories about butterflies and digitised them using the Scratch app. We constructed 3D butterflies which we hung from the roof too.               On the 9th of June we waved goodbye and set our butterflies free. It was a magical experience watching them grow and...

We are High Achievers

We have been very busy in Senior Infants working on our narrative writing and we are so proud of the work we have produced. We did lots of writing based on the story of Little Red Riding Hood such as character descriptions, a letter to granny from the wolf and retelling of the story in our own words. We worked really hard on including new sentence openers in our writing such as ‘Suddenly’, ‘Just then’ and ‘At Last’. Take a look below and prepare to be impressed.   This week we have been working on creating our very own digital stories using Puppet Pals. We are creating our own versions of Little Red Riding Hood and we are having so much fun. We are really letting our imagination flow. One of the ideas for a new title was Little Red Riding Hood and Treacherous Fire. We are really excited to showcase our stories to the class on Friday. Have a look at us working on our stories below.                                   We were so proud of ourselves and each other today when we recieved our certificates and gold medals for participating in the 2016 DDLETB Active Youth challenge. Gerard; our coach presented each of us with our own certificate and medal. We love being active in school and we really enjoyed our activities with...

To Infinity and beyond…

Our Space Topic For the past couple of weeks we have been working really hard and learning all about Space. We really enjoyed this topic and could keep on learning as there is so much to know about Space. We read lots of stories in Literacy such as ‘Whatever Next’, ‘Man on the Moon’ and ‘Aliens Love underpants’. We enjoyed this last story so much that we got to design and name our own alien and write a character description for each one. Take a look below…   After we read ‘Man on the Moon’ we did some descriptive writing about a journey to the moon.  This was really exciting and we did it by thinking of what we might see, hear, taste and smell while we were there. We listened to each other read our descriptions aloud and we were so impressed with each others imaginations. How do you fly to space? In a Rocket of course! We even wrote our very own Rocket Shaped Poems. Take a look below                               After writing our rocket poems, we then went on to launch our very own rockets outside. This was so exciting as we carried out an investigation by making a prediction and then recording our results. Our investigation was called ‘The film Canister Rocket’. Our teacher put a fizzy tablet along with some water into a film canister and we watched our rockets take off. Click here for our Rocket Video!   Here are our investigations; our predictions and our results   We finished off...

A Busy First Week Back

It was a very busy first week back for Senior Infants. On Monday, the Dentist came to visit. She reminded us how important it is to take care of our teeth and we talked about what foods are good and not so good for our teeth. Some of us even had a go at brushing a pretend set of teeth. The Dentist was very impressed at how good we were at brushing.             We also learned a Top Tip for brushing our teeth: Brush for 3 minutes – the length of our favourite song On Tuesday, the local community Garda; Garda Bob visited our school. He talked to us about Road Safety and Stranger Danger. We talked about what a Garda looks like and what he wears and how we would identify one out in the community. Our favouite part of the day was getting into the Garda Car and pretending to be a Garda. Garda Bob even put on the siren but some of us found it very loud. We really enjoyed having the Dentist and Garda Bob visit our school this week.               Thinge we need to remember:  Always wear a seatbelt in the car                                                          Always get out of the car onto the footpath                                                      ...

Proclamation Day Celebrations

We had great fun today celebrating Proclamation Day in our class. We learned all about the Irish flag and what it represents. In Art we, recreated our own Irish flag using green, white and orange crepe paper and we were very proud of them when they were complete.                As part of our History lesson we learned about what school life was like for children in 1916. We put our historian hats on and analysed some photos from the past. Once we learned what school was like in 1916, we were then able to compare it to our own school days in 2016 and they were very different. Take a look at what we learned below. We really enjoyed the day and we finished it by singing some Irish songs. One of our favourites was ‘Dilín ó Deamhas’ We hope you enjoyed looking at our...

Spring is in full Swing

Spring is in full swing in our classroom, we have been doing a lot of work based around the topic of Spring. For most of us, it is our favourite season, as everything starts growing again, the days are getting longer so we have more time to play in the evenings after school and it’s fun doing a big Spring clean. We talked about all the things we can see, hear, smell and touch in Spring and then did some fantastic writing on our new topic. We talked about the fresh smell of the daffodils, the softness of the baby lambs and the beautiful colours in the garden. We also wrote some Spring acrostic poems which were really fun. We realised that all poems didn’t have to rhyme. We really enjoyed writing these poems.   Next it was time to learn about the life cycle of a chicken, we looked at lots of videos and pictures and we found it fascinating. We then made a class picture to show our understanding of the cycle.   In art we designed 3D daffodils and created our own daffodil garden. We think they look so pretty, don’t...
